How to Handle Coins to Avoid Damage

Coin collectors want to keep their coins in the best condition possible. The condition of the coin keeps the value higher and any type of damage will bring the value down. Fingerprints, dents, scratches or even polishing can all visibly damage a coin and lower its value. Knowing how to handle coins, can make all the difference in keeping them in mint condition.

When handling loose coins, always avoid touching the coin surfaces, touch the coin itself as little as possible and only pick them up by the edges, using the thumb and forefinger of your dominant hand. The oil from our skin which leaves fingerprints can damage the coin’s surface. Saliva can also damage the surface of coins. When we talk, spittle is released from our mouths into the air, therefore take care to hold the coins out and away from the mouth.

When handling a coin that is not in a protective holder, always lay out a soft towel, cloth, or lined coin tray on the table under the coin. This will help protect the coin if accidentally dropped. Washing your hands can help removed chemicals and oil from your fingertips, especially if a non-scented alcohol based sanitizing cleaner is used, but be sure hands are completely dry before handling the coins.

If the coins are in a protective holder, it is best to leave them there. If it is necessary to remove them, using the tips in this article will help ensure the least amount of damage.
